Sharp Cooperates in Appliance Reuse Initiative of Mie University
Used Appliances Given to New Students (Japan)

Mie University students load used appliances onto a truck

Sharp Corporation's Mie Plant in Taki County, Mie Prefecture is helping out with Mie University's appliance reuse program by collecting used appliances from transferred employees and other households so that they can be donated to the university.

Sponsored by a Mie University student environmental group called the Environmental ISO Student Committee, this initiative aims to promote reuse of appliances by collecting them from graduating students and providing them free-of-charge to first year students living on their own. The Mie Plant began taking part in this program in 2011 as part of efforts towards effective use of resources.

On March 21, just before the start of the new academic year, employees presented the university with 16 refrigerators, 10 microwave ovens, one rice cooker, and one washing machine. The program has been popular among employees, who appreciate how it helps reduce waste and gives their families a chance to consider the importance of recycling.
