Mie Plant Helps Out Shorthanded Village (Japan)

Clearing idle farmland

Cleaning dead leaves and earth out of roadside ditches

On April 20, 2013, the Mie Plant of Sharp Corporation held a cleanup in a remote village in Odai Town.

Located next to Taki Town, where the Mie Plant is located, Odai Town has a growing number of settlements with dwindling and aging populations. With some numbering 10 households or fewer, the settlements don't have enough people to maintain local roads and roadside ditches. As idle farmland becomes overgrown with weeds, wild boar and other animals are encroaching and creating havoc for the elderly locals.

The Mie Plant has been volunteering to help out with such villages for the past two years. On April 20, the Urata district of Odai Town was the site of a cleanup by 15 volunteers who cleared vacant fields of weeds and cleaned out roadside ditches. The head of the district residents' committee thanked Sharp for providing the maintenance help that was so badly needed.
