Sowing Buckwheat in Idle Farmland(Japan)

Sowing seeds in turned farmland

Participants in the field

The Mie Plant of Sharp Corporation(Taki, Mie)started cultivating buckwheat in idle farmland in Kurumagawa, Taki Town last year. In this area, abandoned farmland has been a serious concern due to graying famers, lack of their successors and crop damage caused by animals. These activities are carried out with the purpose of reviving and preserving such farmland.

On August 24, 2013, as the first even of such an activity of this fiscal year, the total 52 people including local residents and participants from the Mie prefectural office, the Taki Town office and MIE Technology Corporation, a production cooperation company of the Mie Plant, sowed buckwheat. Despite the rain, those participants enjoyed planting and exchanging with the local people. In autumn, they are going to harvest buckwheat and make soba noodles.
