Green Curtain Covering the Mie Plant Receives Award(Japan)

Green curtains grown thick and rank

A look of the green curtains from inside the building

Green curtains grown over the wall of the Mie Plant (Taki Town, Mie Prefecture) won the "Competition of Life with Green (group)" (the 2nd win after the first in 2011) of the "Campaign: Let's Spread Green Curtains 2013 " sponsored by SUUMO*, a real estate and housing web site.

The Mie Plant has been cultivating green curtains as part of the efforts to save energy every summer. They planted the seeds of goya, bitter gourd, harvested last year and used organic fertilizers such as a compost made of fallen leaves and fowl droppings. They have grown thick and rank over the net. They help keep the indoor temperature lower, and popular among the employees as they look refreshing to their eyes.

Those harvested goya was used as an ingredient of goya chanpuru (a traditional recipe from Okinawa), and served at the company cafeteria. The dish was very popular among the staff members and all went.
