Local Elementary School Children Experience Bamboo Shoot Dig (Japan)

A Mie Plant employee explains how to dig bamboos

Children work together to pull bamboo shoots

Every spring, Sharp’s Mie Plant invites students of nearby elementary schools to bamboo shoot dig in the bamboo forest on the grounds of its factory. This year, 48 students ranging from the first grade to the third grade from Tsuda Elementary School in the Taki district of Mie Prefecture visited the factory on May 7.

After a Mie Plant employee had explained how to dig bamboos, the students helped each other in pulling bamboo shoots from the ground.

After the digging, they learned that digging bamboos helped preserve the ecosystem, as fast growing bamboos prevent other bamboos from growing, in the lecture on the bamboo growth and bamboo forests.

Participating children were very happy to receive two to three bamboos each for their homes. The Mie Plant plans to hold activities like this to raise children’s awareness of environmental preservation in the future.
