Water Creature Observation Tour in the Sana River Running Near the Mie Plant (Japan)

Collecting creatures in the river

Counting captured creatures and their species

On August 1, the Association of Cleanup the Sana River, whose secretariat is run by the Mie Plant of Sharp Corporation, held a water creature observation tour in the Sana River for local elementary school children, in cooperation with the Mie River and National Highway Office of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation Ministry. The activity has been held once a year around this time since 2009, with the purpose of raising children’s awareness of the environment through activities in the local river. Those children also use such an experience for the homework of their summer vacations.

This year, 34 participants including local children and their parents joined the tour. They checked the water quality using simple measuring devices and counted the number of fish and water insects and their species they caught in the river, according to the instructor from a consultant firm (Civil Engineering and Eco-Technology Consultants Co., Ltd.). Despite the fierce heat, those participant children enjoyed contacting with creatures almost without noticing such heat. Those captured creatures were put back into the river by themselves after the tour for environmental protection.
