On October 18th, Sharp Manufacturing Company of U.K (SUKM) received a sustainability award of '10th Business and Sustainability Awards' at an evening gala dinner held jointly in Cardiff and Wrexham, the venues being linked live by satellite with over 500 guests in attendance. This is an environmental award established by ARENA Network, an independent organization providing practical support to business in Wales on environmental management.

Although SUKM did not win the main award, they were "Highly Commended" in the 'Sustainability and EMS Reporting' category. Their efforts on sustainability were described by the judges as "progressive" and the environmental reporting system on the SUKM Intranet was reported as "robust".

Examples of their efforts on sustainability are significant reduction of CO2 and wastes emission at the same time over a two year period, reduction of Solar panel packaging through introduction of a new product, and provision of a sound basis for new product development through establishment of robust environmental management system.

Bill Thomas, SUKM Q.C. General Manager said, "This is the third environmental award SUKM have received in the last year, but the first that recognizes our move towards a sustainable operation and is just reward for the efforts of everyone at our site."
