SUK Green Week Raises Environmental Awareness among Employees (the UK)

At Sharp Electronics (U.K.) Ltd. (SUK), November 23 to 27, 2009 was Green Week--an environmental event designed to raise awareness about the importance of environmental protection and to encourage employees to proactively save energy, reduce waste, and recycle both at work and at home.

Global warming was the theme for the first day of Green Week. Accordingly, a representative from Energy Saving Trust, a non-profit organization funded by the British government, talked to employees about the issues surrounding global warming, and SUK distributed environmental brochures containing practical advice on how to reduce CO2 emissions.

SUK pursued an energy-saving theme on the second day by showing employees how smart meters can help them monitor their energy consumption. On the third day, a presentation by a representative from SUK's WEEE (Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment) compliance scheme helped deepen employee understanding of recycling. And for the fourth- and fifth-day theme of transportation, state-of-the-art bicycles and eco-friendly vehicles were put on display, and employees were given the chance to experience simulated eco-driving.

Throughout the week, employee participation was high, thanks in part to SUK's efforts to spur interest in the event. Green Week banners and posters were prominently displayed, and SUK enticed employees to read them by devising a quiz whose answers could be found in the promotional materials. SUK believes this event have made a positive contribution towards raising the environmental awareness.
