Sharp Issues Annual Environmental and Social Report for 2007

Sharp Corporation has issued its Environmental and Social Report 2007, a compilation of information and data on its fiscal 2006 activities related to protecting the environment and fulfilling its social responsibilities.

Highlights of the Environmental and Social Report 2007

1. Special feature introduces Sharp’s efforts to achieve sustainable manufacturing that protects the global environment

The report introduces Sharp’s efforts for environmentally sustainable manufacturing from three angles in an easy-to-understand manner: expanding the use of solar power, environmentally conscious product design as epitomized by the AQUOS, and Green Factories that reduce negative environmental impact and contribute to the local community. It also introduces comments from various stakeholders.

2. Special focus on particularly interesting CSR activities

The report takes a close look at three of Sharp’s unique activities for fulfilling CSR: the Customer Assistance Center, CSR activities conducted by sales bases in Japan that are rooted in the local community, and environmental education programs involving weathercasters.

3. Share-of-net-sales goals reached for Super Green Products as exemplified by the AQUOS

Sharp was able to achieve the targets it set regarding the percentage of net sales accounted for by Super Green Products (fiscal 2006 target 30%, achieved 49%), Green Seal Products (target 85%, achieved 93%), Super Green Devices (target 10%, achieved 12%), and Green Devices (target 65%, achieved 73%).

4. Steady progress in converting all Sharp production sites to Green Factories

Sharp is making great strides in upgrading its production sites to Super Green Factories (SGF)—a typical example being the Kameyama Plant—or to Green Factories (GF). In fiscal 2006, Sharp certified five plants as SGF and five other plants as GF in Japan. Meanwhile, Sharp exceeded its initial target for overseas production sites, certifying three plants as SGF and twelve as GF. Sharp is making steady progress towards upgrading all of its plants both inside and outside of Japan to GF by the end of fiscal 2007.

5. Clarifying objectives and achievements for both the environmental and social aspects of Sharp’s activities

In its environmental reporting, Sharp has always clearly expressed its objectives and achievements for important measures. In this year’s report, the objectives and achievements in areas important for each kind of stakeholder are also clearly stated in coverage of social activities.

6. Color Universal Design (CUD) certification

This year’s report incorporates Color Universal Design, which means that it was designed to be read easily by as many people as possible, regardless of their degree of color vision. In recognition of this, the report has been certified by the Color Universal Design Organization, a nonprofit organization in Japan.

7. Internet posting and global availability

The contents of the report will be available on Sharp’s website at the end of July. The printed report will be issued not only in Japanese, but also in English and Chinese at the end of July as part of Sharp’s efforts to make information even more widely available on a global basis.
