Sharp Corporation will introduce into the Japanese market three new humidifying air
purifiers that powerfully remove allergens such as airborne household dust, pollen
and dust mite particles as well as lingering adsorbed odors using a combination of
Twin Plasmacluster Ion Power based on dual Plasmacluster Ion generators, a first in
a home-use unit, and a newly developed 20° Angled Outflow Duct.
Using a combination of Twin Plasmacluster Ion Power that dramatically increases the
volume of Plasmacluster Ions generated, and a 20° Angled Outflow Duct that
accelerates air circulation in the room for more efficient dust extraction, the KC-C150
quickly and powerfully removes house dust and pollen at twice the speed of the
predecessor model*2. These models also quickly decompose and eliminate allergens
such as dust mite particles. They also feature a powerful deodorizing function that
eliminates even odors clinging to curtains and walls. Plus, a full-fledged humidifying
function with the industry's highest*1 humidifying capacity of 760 mL/hour (KC-C150),
powerful enough for a living room up to 35 m2, creates a pleasant environment that
helps keep house dust and pollen from drifting in the air. And, the adoption of a
proprietary rotating filter disc humidifying mechanism doubles*3 the service life of the
humidifier filter.
Dust mites and house dust are said to be the cause of 80% of allergy-related
illnesses. In this light, Sharp is offering this new series of air purifiers to provide a
clean indoor environment all year round thanks to full-fledged humidification, new
angled outflow duct, and its proprietary Plasmacluster Ion technology, now more
effective than ever.

Development Background
Conventional approaches to removing dust, pollen and dust mite particles in the
home include ventilation, vacuum cleaning, and wiping with a dust cloth (at least
once a week).
However, the reality is that many consumers cannot adequately put these
approaches into practice for reasons that include "no time," "takes too much effort,"
"can't keep up the effort for long" etc. (according to Sharp research).
As a result, consumers are seeking air purifiers--the most appropriate way to deal
with household dust, pollen and dust mite particles--that can keep the indoor
environment clean with a minimum of effort all year round.
In addition, it is widely recognized that raising indoor humidity is effective in
controlling drifting household dust and pollen as well as minimizing the drying of the
mucous membranes in the nose and throat. Therefore, an increasing number of
people are also seeking an air purifier equipped with a humidifying function.
Thanks to the combination of Twin Plasmacluster Ion Power and a new Angled
Outflow Duct, Sharp is offering an air purifier that quickly removes household dust
(suspended dust particles) and powerfully decomposes and inactivates floating dust
mite particles, a major cause of allergies.

Outstanding Features
| 1. |
Combination of Twin Plasmacluster Ion Power (KC-C150) and newly
developed 20° Angled Outflow Duct improves air purifying power |
|
| 1) |
Quickly extracts suspended household dust and pollen twice as fast
(KC-C150) as the predecessor model. Also decomposes and eliminates
allergens such as dust mite particles
|
|
The model KC-C150 is equipped with two Plasmacluster Ion generators for Twin
Plasmacluster Ion Power that dramatically boosts the volume of ions generated, plus
all models feature a newly developed Long and Wide 20° Angled Outflow Duct with a
funnel-shaped nozzle designed using the principles of aerodynamics. This design
enhances blown air efficiency and minimizes reductions in airflow velocity, plus
applying the principle of providing a greater length of air contact along wall surfaces
(Coanda effect) makes the blown air circulate more rapidly throughout the entire
room. In addition, a Rear Panel Intake Grid on the back of the cabinet allows room air
to be drawn into the unit efficiently. In combination, these features enable household
dust and pollen to be extracted from the air at a rate approximately twice as fast as
the predecessor model (KC-C150). And these models also powerfully decompose
and eliminate allergens such as dust mite particles.
|
| 2) |
Powerful deodorizing of clinging odors. Also neutralizes static electricity
generated under dry conditions at double*4 the speed of the predecessor
model (KC-C150)
|
|
Twin Plasmacluster Ion Power creates a powerful deodorizing action for odors that
cling to curtains and furniture such as couches. In addition, static electricity
generated when the air is dry is neutralized at a speed double that of the
predecessor model KC-51C1, reducing the tendency for household dust and pollen to
adhere to clothing, furniture such as couches, etc.
| 2. |
Nine-level Dust Monitor provides a visual indication of the amount of
household dust being captured (KC-C150/C100) |
The Dust Monitor uses a dust sensor to monitor the room environment for airborne
dust particles and provide a visual indication of how much household dust is
suspended in the air. The lights on the monitor display panel change color to indicate
nine levels of air cleanliness, showing at a glance the level of impurities in the room
air, and confirming that the air is being adequately cleaned.
| 3. |
Full-fledged humidifying with a capacity of 760 mL/hour (KC-C150), the
industry's highest. Plus, a proprietary rotating filter disc humidifying
mechanism doubles the service life of the humidifier filter. |
Full-fledged humidifying with a capacity of 760 mL/hour (KC-C150),
the industry's
highest*1, is capable of handling large living spaces up to 35 m2 in area to
create a pleasantly moist indoor environment that minimizes suspended dust and
pollen floating in the air. Further, the adoption of a proprietary rotating filter
disc humidifying mechanism maintains humidity in the entire room while air purifying
is going on. As the air is being purified, the filter disc automatically starts
and stops rotating according to the humidity conditions in the room, creating
a comfortable environment. This feature also helps protect the nose and throat
from dryness, and even suppresses the activity of viruses.
In addition, the use of a rotating filter disc for humidifying ensures that the water is
distributed uniformly over the entire filter, thus maintaining humidifying performance
and extending the service life of the filter to double that of the predecessor model*3.
Plus, when the humidifying feature is not in operation, the humidifying filter disc is
automatically stopped in a position where it is not immersed in water, keeping it dry
and ensuring that it will always be sanitary and hygienically clean when used.

Filter design ensures high performance over the long term. Plus simple,
easy care |
| |
For improved dust extraction performance, these models feature a new Micron Mesh Preliminary Filter to capture dust particles larger than approximately 500 µm in size. It is designed to prevent dust particles from penetrating into the high-performance dust filter (anti-bacterial*5 HEPA
filter) and keep performance losses in this filter to a minimum. Also, the surface
of the Micron Mesh Preliminary Filter is coated with a fluorine-containing polymer
resin, allowing adsorbed dust particles to be cleaned simply and easily. |
| |
The high-performance dust filter is an anti-bacterial HEPA filter capable of
extracting more than 99.97% of dust particles 0.3 µm in size. It also works to
minimize the activity of allergens*6 and viruses*7 such as pollen (removes 99.9%)
and dust mite particles (removes 99.9%), etc. |
| |
The deodorizing filter is washable, and its ability to remove odors can be restored
simply by regular washing using clean water. Thus, it never needs to be replaced. |
| |
In addition, the humidifying filter features enhanced anti-bacterial*8 and fungicidal
(anti-mold)*9 capabilities, and is designed to prevent reduced humidifying
performance resulting from contamination or lime deposits (hard-water scale). It is
also simple and easy to remove, and the entire filter unit can be washed, ensuring
that sanitary humidifying is always available. |

Motivation for Explaining the Mechanism
Since the successful development of Plasmacluster Ions in 2000, Sharp has worked
with authoritative independent organizations at the cutting edge of their fields to
scientifically prove the effectiveness of these ions in suppressing various types of
bacteria, viruses and allergens. However, myriad types of these harmful airborne
substances exist, and testing the effectiveness of Plasmacluster Ions against all of
these individually would be difficult and time-consuming. That is why Sharp has been
working to elucidate the suppression mechanism, which lies at the root of their
effectiveness. Thanks to the success in explaining the suppression mechanism
against mite allergens, the suppression mechanisms against all sorts of harmful
substances that have thus far been demonstrated have come to be understood.
Through this mechanism explanation, it became clear that the effectiveness of
Plasmacluster Ions against a wide range of harmful substances could be anticipated.
Working Mechanism for Plasmacluster Ions
It has come to be understood that the working mechanism for Plasmacluster Ions
against bacteria, viruses and allergens is that positive and negative ions surround
them, and OH radicals generated from the ions damage their structure by
fragmenting and decomposing proteins on their surfaces.
