Concept
The advantage of integration is that it produces a spiral effect of development and production-the ideal manufacturing style that Sharp is aiming for.

manufacturing technologies

Sharp’s spiral strategy involves making the most of the synergy created when key devices and products feed off each other, resulting in further development. The Kameyama Plant is a revolutionary, state-of-the-art facility that carries out integrated production from manufacture of LCD panels to final assembly of TV sets. It has streamlined processes for distribution, production, and inspection. By bringing all of Sharp’s expertise in proprietary liquid crystal technologies and TV audio-visual technologies together in one place, efficient development and design are realized, and the spiral effect between devices and products is enhanced.

Fusion of liquid crystal Technologies and TV audio-visual technologies

With the integration of production sites, engineers are closer to each other. The fusion of liquid crystal technologies and TV technologies enables the rapid feedback of information and boosts overall competitiveness, which, in turn, brings about improved design quality, shorter production lead-time, and thinner, lighter products. It has, so to speak, brought synergy to the equation, such that 1+1 equals 3.

Harmony between development and production

Constant consultation between development and production departments leads to continuous improvement. By locating not only technology development sites but also production sites in Japan and consolidating the two in one area, Sharp believes it can cross departmental boundaries and thus manufacture better products.

Spiral effect between people and the organization

Sharp has established its own Special Project Team system for the development of new products and the start up of new projects. Under this system, teams made up of members selected from relevant departments across the company use their know-how and skills to develop promising, one-of-a-kind products and technologies. They report directly to the company president. This original system for flexibly promoting business across the boundaries of the organization has resulted in many best-selling products for Sharp, including LCD TVs, the LCD ViewCam, and PDAs. The Kameyama Plant has adopted this system to further promote product development.
