There are several types of solar cells. One type is high-efficiency, high-reliability crystal silicon solar cells, and another type is thin-film silicon solar cells which use only 1/100 the amount of silicon, can be low-cost and mass produced though inferior to crystal silicon solar cells in efficiency. Thin-film silicon solar cells can be made see-through and used as windows, or skylights, whereas in the past it had only been possible to install solar cells on roofs and the like.
