2009 : Green Front Sakai Begins Operation

Sharp Installs Approximately 10,000 Industrial Plasmacluster Ion Generators at Sharp Offices and Sales Bases in Japan and Abroad

In April 2008, Sharp began installing approximately 10,000 industrial Plasmacluster ion generators at its offices and sales bases in Japan and abroad in preparation against a worldwide pandemic of new viruses.

Sharp Announces New Environmental Vision of Becoming an Eco-Positive Company

In fiscal 2008, Sharp achieved its environmental vision of having its energy-creating and energy-saving products more than balance out its greenhouse emissions by fiscal 2010—two years ahead of schedule. In fiscal 2009, Sharp replaced this vision with a new environmental vision of becoming an Eco-Positive Company. Under this vision, Sharp set a goal of more than doubling greenhouse gas emission reductions (through customer use of Sharp's energy-creating and energy-saving products) compared with Sharp's total greenhouse gas emissions (from its worldwide business activities), by 2012, the 100th anniversary of its founding.

Sharp Enters Market for Residential Lighting with LED Lamps

NSharp developed LED lamps and in August 2009 took its first step into the residential lighting market with the release of several models in Japan.

Sharp Establishes Consumer Electronics and Office Equipment Sales Subsidiary in Vietnam

Sharp established Sharp Electronics (Vietnam) Company Limited, a sales subsidiary for consumer electronics and office equipment in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The new company began operations on July 1, 2009.

Sharp Signs Agreement for 6th-Generation LCD Panel Production Project in China

Sharp signed an agreement with Nanjing CEC-PANDA LCD Technology Co., Ltd. to carry out a project for production of LCD panels using 6th-generation glass substrates. This new company is an LCD production company established jointly by Nanjing City and Nanjing China Electronics Panda Group Corporation (CEC Panda). Sharp will collaborate with the new company on construction of an LCD panel plant and production of LCD panels by providing its LCD production technology and know-how as well as Kameyama Plant No. 1's cutting-edge, 6th-generation production equipment.

Sharp and Sony Corporation Begin LCD Joint Venture

Sharp and Sony Corporation entered into an agreement on July 30, 2009 to establish a joint venture company to produce and sell large LCD panels and modules. On December 29, 2009, Sony invested in Sharp Display Products Corporation (SDP), the company that runs the LCD panel plant, in exchange for new shares to be issued by SDP to Sony as a third-party allocation. As a result of this transaction, SDP became a joint venture company of both Sharp and Sony.

Sharp Releases LX Series LED AQUOS Incorporating Next-Generation LCD Panels

Sharp developed a photo-alignment technology called UV2A as a core technology for next-generation LCD TV panels. By adopting a special alignment-film material that responds to UV (ultraviolet) radiation, this technology can precisely control the alignment of liquid crystal molecules in accordance with the direction of the radiation.

Sharp released four LX Series LED AQUOS models, which employ an LCD panel incorporating UV2A technology and an LED backlight. Sharp began introducing this new series into worldwide markets with the November 10, 2009 release in Japan.

Operations Begin at LCD Panel Plant at Green Front Sakai

On October 1, 2009, Sharp started operations at its new LCD panel plant (Sharp Display Products Corporation) in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, Japan. This LCD panel plant is a part of Sharp's state-of-the-art manufacturing complex—Green Front Sakai—that also includes a plant for thin-film solar cells.
